What is a project?

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) defines a project as a temporary endeavor with a beginning and an end that creates a unique product, service, or result.

Projects vs. Operations

• Projects are temporary and close when the project's tasks are completed and the service has been implemented.
• Operations are ongoing maintenance or core business functions that produce a similar result or a repetitive service. Operational service requests are available in the DoIT Service Catalog.

Project Examples:

• New software or server implementations
• Upgrades to current solutions
• Network installation/configuration
• Technology installations
• System integrations
• High Power Computing

Project Criteria:

• New software or technology purchase is needed

• Enhancement or modification requires coordination from 2 or more departments/divisions

• IT Effort needed to implement is greater than 20 hours of a single resource.

• The outcomes will impact more than one department/division or have a campus-wide impact

• The request is coming as a result of or funded by a grant

Who's Eligible:

Staff and faculty can submit project proposals that have Sponsor approval.

Project Sponsor

A project sponsor is a cabinet-level leader authorized to assign resources (people/funds) to the project, support the business needs, and be responsible for the initiative's success.
